“The fact that young people think socialism is better than capitalism … that’s something that conservatives have to work hard to beat out of them, either literally or figurative, as far as I’m concerned.”—Jonah Goldberg, Right-Wing Conservative Hack Extraordinaire and Self-Appointed Emissary to the Young (via theworldisconfused)
Good luck with that. Side note: not all of us are all that young. I’m 37, for instance.
Bloomberg is banning the sale of large sodas in NYC. today. msnbc. msn. com/id/47628473/ns/today-the_new_york_times/t/nyc-plans-ban-big-sizes-sugary-drinks/#. T8f5eNVfGSq is what that post was about. This is after hes banned trans fats, salt, and donating food to the homeless because it may contain too high levels of fat and salt.
You guys I stopped drinking soda like 6 months ago. Its NOT THE FUCKING POINT. The fucking point is we all are adults and shouldn’t have to live in a fucking fascist fucking nanny state.
Lol no. The point is results. Human beings are weak, impressionable creatures who are powerless in the face of relentless, psychologically researched campaigns to profit off our propensity for addiction. Especially children. It’s criminal how we market to children and sell them poison like sugary drinks, sweets and other treats. If children were a different ethnicity than grownups, it would be genocide. Their only defense is a Nanny State - fuck yeah! - stepping in and saying our naive, pathetic faith (and faith itself is the most pathetic thing ever devised) in the juvenile concept of “free choice” doesn’t matter. What matters are results, statistics, and saving the next generation from this obesity plagued rained down on them by the profiteers of Madison Avenue, agribusiness and the beverage industry.
Michael Bloomberg - and I hate his imperiousness as much as the next person - is the most brilliant mayor of NYC in my lifetime by several light years. This law — which is thankfully completely not subject to any review by the City Council or other legislative bodies, and will take effect next March no matter how much the libertarians gnash their teeth — completely puts to bed anyone who objected to his third term. Because I guarantee you Bill Thompson would never have the fucking balls to do what Mike Bloomberg has done in the past decade on smoking, trans fat, high fructose corn syrup and other poisons threatening New Yorkers’ public health.
Cigarette bans aren’t for smokers, they’re for the people sitting next to the smokers. I guess once people drinking big sodas spit their coke in my mouth maybe I’ll agree with some kind of public large-beverage ban, but until then this is apples and oranges.
“It’s criminal how we market to children and sell them poison like sugary drinks, sweets and other treats. If children were a different ethnicity than grownups, it would be genocide.”
no I don’t think that’s quite true
because children are not being murdered with soda
I mean maybe I’m not quite clear on the definition of words but I’m really fucking sure that I have a better grasp on them than you do.
Soda is not a murder weapon. Obesity is not genocide.
I would love to murder you with soda right now for that asinine fucking commentary. If Bloomberg truly felt that fat and salt were poison why doesn’t he follow his own rules? Or do rich white billionaires not have to, it’s only poison for the poor and middle class? It’s no one’s business to “save” anyone else from obesity. Are you buying all these people’s groceries to know that it’s specifically soda that’s leading them to an early grave? Do you know if they exercise along with drinking their Coke? Do you know if even though by bullshit BMI standards they’re actually still fucking healthy? Mike Bloomberg is a terrible fucking mayor. His laws actually hurt the city but he refuses to do anything about that after they’re already in place. And you applaud his tactics of pushing laws through without anyone else having a say on them? That’s not democracy and people have a right to be upset about that.
I’m no capital-L Libertarian, not by a long-shot. I am however a strong supporter of personal liberties, so you could say I am a small-l libertarian, at least in cases where one’s individual choices do not cause undue harm to others. This is a whole other conversation, however.
On to the point I wish to make. Outlawing soda is not a good idea, as it applies to symptoms, not causes, of the true problem.
Children are not adults, and do not have the same capacity for critical thinking and cause/effect decision making as adults. Companies that advertise directly to children are well aware of this fact. Now of course, one can say to parents that they should just not buy their children this stuff, and that is a somewhat valid point. However, I myself am a parent, of an 11-year old boy. I do not have the budget or time to match wits with the billions spent by advertisers every year, but I do my best. He gets soda as a treat, it is definitely not a daily thing.
He does get an allowance though, and when I’m not around, how can I control what he buys with it?
Instead of outlawing soda, or prohibiting it; what should be outlawed is aggressive advertising targeting children.
The true demons here are not Mayor Bloomberg, they are not nanny states, they are not poor parenting. They are unscrupulous businesses whose only concern is making the almighty dollar, consequences be damned.
Have you ever found a way to automatically send your Tumblr posts to your self hosted WordPress blog? I am trying to do the same thing, and I saw you asked out there somewhere and I was hoping that you could share with me how to do this, if you ever figured it out. Thank you for your time.
No unfortunately I haven’t. I suppose the best thing to do as a workaround would be to use an RSS feed importer plugin on the WordPress, and then use the RSS feed of the Tumblr.
It is a bit frustrating, as I’ve found some ways to do it the other way around. You would think it would be possible, because of this, but who knows.
